An AI platform for the rapid creation of biocatalytic cascades for innovative bioprocesses

Project description

Biocatalytic reactions are a promising solution for the sustainable and scalable production of various chemical compounds, including specialty and commodity chemicals, cosmetics, food, flavors and pharmaceuticals.
The goal of bioprocess technology is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and transition to a sustainable bioeconomy that is ideal for local production and consumption, thus contributing to local social and economic development.
Compared to petrochemical processes, bioprocesses using in vitro enzyme cascades are often much more energy efficient and do not require purification of intermediates.
Current challenges of designing such in vitro cascades include limited data availability, the inherent complexity of biocatalytic systems, the optimization of reaction conditions and experimental validation.

Goals

The aim of the “BioCasNavi” project is to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI)-based platform for the automated design of multi-enzymatic cascade systems for the sustainable synthesis of high-quality, industrially usable compounds from renewable raw materials. BioCasNavi is developing a comprehensive database of enzymatic reactions and conditions as well as AI algorithms for the design and optimization of cascades. The project is accompanied by process development and scaling and socio- and techno-economic studies that define the requirements for sustainable production and responsible use of resources from an industrial perspective. If successful, a new and widely applicable digital platform technology will be developed that enables rapid innovation cycles in the bioeconomy by identifying novel value chains and production processes for sustainable catalysis and synthesis in the bio-based industry.
